One of the many benefits of building with New Village Homes is the optional guest house or mother-in-law suite in your new home. Create a beautifully decorated space where you can comfortably host visiting friends and family at a moment’s notice.
The key to picking colors for a guest room is utilizing a calm, relaxing color palette. Earth tones lend themselves to feel timeless, neutral, clean, and soothing. In addition, neutral tones are incredibly versatile, meshing easily with most styles. The intention for decorating your mother-in-law suite is to create a space where friends and family can rest and unwind, where the entire room exudes the feeling of comfort.
Furniture is the most crucial and biggest investment. If you are upgrading your master bedroom and will be using new furniture, your casita would be the perfect place to continue utilizing your most recently enjoyed bedroom set. Though a full-size bed is slightly smaller, giving you more room for your walkways, a queen is the most comfortable option. It easily sleeps two people which is something to keep in mind for hosting couples. Matching nightstands and lamps on either side of the bed provide balance to the room and make it visually appealing and inviting.
Other furniture choices include a long dresser and mirror, complimenting the other furniture. A vanity and comfortable reading chair create an inviting and restful atmosphere. A more petite chair combined with an area rug that fits under it and a portion of the bed, create a cozy sitting area for guests. If incorporating a television, it can be mounted above a long dresser, opposite the bed to save space. A tall, thinner armoire is also a beautiful addition. Once the furniture is chosen, you may want to consider utilizing rugs. Large area rugs create an inviting, cozy casita, like when creating the sweet seating area with a welcoming chair. With your key pieces now in place, you’re ready to personalize and utilize accessories.
When picking out anything with texture, think warm and inviting. Though primarily decorative, pillows or extra blankets should lend themselves to your calm and comfortable feel. Whether classified as decor or comforts, display the extra blankets where guests can easily find them. This is where incorporating a few accent colors is possible, and in turn, gives the room a personality.
When considering wall art, we choose pieces deliberately keep neutral colors and accent colors in mind. A guest room is a perfect place to show off photos or artwork by a budding artist in your home, or use paintings or art pieces from your last home. If you have a low headboard, put one key piece above the bed. It is the first thing your guests see when they walk in the room and adds to the symmetry you created with the matching nightstands and lamps. Mirrors can also be utilized above a long dresser, or in the corner, in place of a chair. A full-length mirror is a great addition to your suite, so guests can have access to it while getting ready. You can create a simple clean look or make a statement, depending on the other furniture pieces in the room.
Don’t be afraid of using a little green. Low maintenance plants, such as succulents and cacti, bring a classy Arizona touch to your guest house. You most likely will not be in the suite every day, but most succulents or cacti only need to be watered about once a week. They bring life to the room and blend well with the calm, earthy tones of an inviting guest house.
With these guidelines, a beautiful guest house at your new home will await your visiting friends and family, and offer them a relaxing, luxurious private home away from home.
